The Trials and Tribulations between the March Trilogy Books and the Movie Selma As Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, â€Å"The nonviolent approach does not immediately change the heart of the oppressor. It first does something to the hearts and souls of those committed to it. It gives them new self-respect; it calls up resources of strength and courage they did not know they had†. (King) The conflicts met between the Civil Rights Movement protesters and the white people of the South were incredibly gruesome. While peace and equality for African Americans was the driving force of the protests, violence and inhuman resistance was the force of the white people. As they were walking across the bridge, Williams asked Lewis, â€Å"Can you swim?† (Lewis and Aydin 3:197) as if to insinuate that going over the bridge may b e what was to come, not knowing what they were to face at the end of the bridge. Where a crowd of resisters was waiting for them. Even though the marchers faced violent opposition and met with conflict, they continued their demonstrations. The books and the movie displayed controversy throughout. One example is during the first attempt to cross the bridge, when the marchers were met by the Alabama State Troopers. It went very dark, very quick, as the troopers barged towards them, making this day known as â€Å"Bloody Sunday†, March 7, 1965. When asked for his comments in the movie by the press after the merciless attack on the marchers, King says â€Å"While rageful violence continues towards the unarmed people of Selma, while they are assaulted with tear gas and batons like enemy in a war, no citizen of this country can call themselves blameless, for we all bear a responsibility for our fellow man. Sigmund Freud contributed greatly to film studies at large. Terms that can be associated with Freud include repression, ID, Ego, Superego, and unconscious. The ID, Superego and ego are all three interconnected layers which Freud believed could cover and understanding the human psyche. The ID is also known as the unconscious being the largest part of the human psyche. This part of your mind has the strongest influence on our day to day actions as being the conscious. This layer is the most primitive component of the human personality. It consists of all the inherited biological compartments of the personality such the Eros or sex (life) instinct and the aggressive (death) instinct (Fotopoulou 137). Behavior is also punished by the superego through guilt, but can als o be rewarding us through the ideal self when the human behaves properly, causing us to feel proud. Both the ideal and conscience are permanently constructed through parental values as the child is brought up. The ego also known as the conscious is the individual him or herself. It’s the more reasoned layer which evolves and becomes stronger as the person progresses. It’s often seen as a sort of mediator between the ID and superego. It’s the ego’s job to suppress and control the ID. The ego is much like the ID it seeks to avoid pain but it takes a realistic approach to achieve pleasure. Compared to the ID the ego is weak, the ego only needs to point the ID in the right direction and reap in the benefits of the result of human actions as if it were its own. This layer has not concept of right or wrong. Its dean’s situations are simply good if the end result does not cause harm to itself or the ID. Majority of the time this layer engages in a secondary process of thinking which is rational and problem solving oriented. CHARACTERS JENNA ROBERT GAS STATION ATTENDANT CHAPLIN [JENNA has been driving all night after a fight with her husband. JENNA leaves a truck stop with a cup of coffee and although it is not her nature to pick up hitch hikers, at this point she figures what is the worst that can happen? Death? Then so be it. ] ROBERT: Hey, can I get a ride? JENNA: Why not? Where are you headed? ROBERT: Oklahoma. [JENNA waits nervously, hoping Robert will find a new ride and that there is nothing to serious wrong with her car. ] GAS STATION ATTENDANT: You need a new hose clamp, I have one. Twenty bucks. JENNA: Really? For a clamp? A little piece of metal? GAS STATION ATTENDANT: Take it or leave it. JENNA: I won’t have enough gas money to make it home! ROBERT: I can get you money for gas. JENNA: What? How? ROBERT: Trust me. JENNA: Ok, go ahead and fix the car. ROBERT: Trust me. JENNA: But how are you going to get money? ROBERT: Easy we will just ask for the chaplin. JENNA: What? What in the hell are you talking about? ROBERT: Trust me. JENNA: [Getting into the car] We only have about an hour to Twin Falls. ROBERT: Will you kiss me then? JENNA: No! ROBERT: Ok. We are stranded and are trying to get home. The car broke down a ways back and we have no money. I am hungry. CHAPLAIN: Have a seat please. JENNA: It looks like you have done this before. ROBERT: [Scowling] That is my business. JENNA: Ok. CHAPLAIN: Ok, here is a gas voucher for fifteen dollars that you can use at the Standard station right up the road and here is your bus ticket voucher along with a voucher for a hot dog and a soda. ROBERT: Thank you. Do you pray to the breast spirits? CHAPLAIN: Just be on your way now. Blessings to you. [Jenna drives to the bus station. ] JENNA: Here you go Robert. Have a safe trip.
